Likes Aren't Everything
I first want to say that I am by no means an Instagram genius, but it has been my number 1 marketing tool since I started my online business. Most of my sales have been generated from social media and it is a great tool for any online store, especially with all of the new apps they keep launching!
Now after telling you that Instagram is my number 1 marketing tool, you may be confused by the title of this post. So let me explain why "Likes Aren't Everything" for business. Now I have an online store, so if my audience is not directed online to my website I'm not going to get any sales. It's as simple as that. I do have some customers who are friends or acquaintances, but that's not where most of my sales are coming from. So it is crucial that I am able to communicate effectively through online platforms, like Instagram.
When you post a photo for your business (not for yourself or personal page), it obviously feels good to get "likes". It means people are liking your photos and what you are representing as a brand. As a business, you have to remember that it is "not personal," I know we hear this phrase all of the time, but hear me out. When you are scrolling through Instagram, do you usually double tap photos of things you like or would like to buy? Or do you stop, take a look, acknowledge and keep scrolling? Even the posts that we send to our friends or comment on saying "OMG so cute, love it" we sometimes don't even "Like".
It makes us feel good to "like" a friend's photo or Instagram celebrity. We want them to know that we care about their life and want to show them a little love. When it comes to brands or businesses, we don't have the same personal connection. So we may like what a brand has posted, but we don't feel the need to "like" it. WHY? I think it's because, unless it's a brand we have a close connection with, we subconsciously don't think they "need" the likes for encouragement since it's a business not a person. Which sounds ridiculous because someone had to create the post, but there isn't an attachment on an emotional level.
So what does matter??? Well likes still do matter since we want this emotional attachment to our audience, but likes aren't everything. They aren't the only thing telling us if are successfully marketing on Instagram. We also need to take into account New Followers, Loyal Followers, Post Re-shares, Comments, Engagements and Reach. As well as direct traffic to our page and sales corresponding with our marketing. If you have a Business Page on Instagram, this data is available to you and you should be checking it weekly to use to your advantage !
So if likes aren't everything, how do increase our overall engagement on our Business Pages ?! Here are a few ideas you can incorporate that will not only increase your "likes," but engagement as well:
1. Write Genuine Captions. Show your audience the personality and culture of your brand. What do
you care about? What are your values? Who is your target market and what do they want to know?
2. Reshare / Repost Your Customers. Share the spotlight and show your customers you value them. This will also make your page more "real" to viewers.
3. Don't Always Sell. Stop shoving sales and promos in front of your followers faces 24-7. They know you want to sell products, you are a business. They want to know more about your products and about the brand itself and its people, you have to earn their trust and respect.
4. HAVE FUN! People want to feel happy when they scroll. They want to be inspired, laugh and relate to everyday experiences. If you are not having fun creating a post, it will translate to your viewers.
So even though social media can help your business and gain sales, you have to be willing to look a little deeper on the impact it can be making. It's more than just "likes" and "follows" when you want to see your product in people's hands! Hope you enjoyed today's topic!
