The Highs & Lows of Entrepreneur Life
On social media, we definitely see the "highs" of being an entrepreneur. The events, the photo shoots, the success and the exciting times of growth! During these times is when I personally feel like I can do anything. These high moments energize me to keep going and fuel my belief in myself and my brand. These are the moments that make every other day worth while. For other people seeing these glamorous moments, it can make entrepreneurial life look like the most fun and stress-free job in the world.
What people don't see is the "lows". The lows we don't want to share with everyone. Those Friday nights at home that we spend on our laptops working away while other people are out for dinner or relaxing. The days we wonder if what we are doing is worth all of the personal stress. The lows for entrepreneurs are full of moments of self-doubt and wondering "what's next?". Will this all work out? Can I be patient? How do I solve these problems? How long will this lull in sales last?
The two extreme feelings during the highs and lows can be exhausting and if you are not good at regulating the emotions that follow these events, you may find yourself mentally drained. So how do we handle these highs and lows? We have to find things that keep us at that moderate level and strategies to keep us calm and grounded. The most difficult thing for me is actually allowing myself to enjoy the "highs" because I know those elated feelings are somewhat temporary. I do allow myself to enjoy the moments and inspire me for the future, but often I have trouble "letting go" because I know it cannot always be so exciting!
During the low times, I try to reminding myself to keep it all in perspective. The lulls sometimes feel much longer than they actually are because we get used to a certain flow of business. I have made impulsive decisions and calls to action out of fear before and that's not the way to get through the lows. Planning future events and calmly problem solving that help get through the lows and staying positive. Even reminiscing about a recent event or success can help get through the slower times.
The "in between" moments are where the magic originates and the best content is curated. Don't take these times for granted. When everything seems to be "okay," is the sweet spot. This is the time to connect with others while you have time. Thrive off of the small moments of success and look forward to what is coming up. If you can keep a level head during this time, you will produce great work. This is where the recovery time happens in between the highs and lows. Where you get back to focusing on your goals and you keep yourself on track.
We all experience these phases of entrepreneurship. It is our "normal". The people who can get through each phase over and over again are the ones who are successful. We have to develop the skills to handle the highs, lows and everything in between and keep our vision clear throughout the entire process.
I hope you enjoyed today's topic. Let's stay connected, we entrepreneurs gotta stick together!
