New to Modeling?

As an entrepreneur I enjoy modeling as part of collaborations with other business owners, brands, photographers and designers. I also get to choose my own models for my own clothing line. In my early days before my brand, I did a lot of fitness modeling, promotional modeling and some commercial modeling so I've had firsthand experience from all sides of the industry. If you want to start modeling to represent other brands or land paid gigs, here are a few tips!

1. Social Media

If you want to be taken seriously as a model you need to display that on your social media. You don't "need" a specific modeling account, but from a first impression someone should be able to tell you are or want to be a model. So How do you do this?!

-Post professional photos, your first few photo shoots you will probably have to make an investment $ or work with a photographer who is just starting and needs to add to their own portfolio

-Ditch the Snapchat filtered photos. We can't see your real face. I would never hire a model to work with if half of their photos had dog ears on them

-Show your whole body. Selfies are great, but they do not show your entire body. If a brand is looking for models they need to see your entire body, not just your face.

There are countless of beautiful people in this world and you are not going to be "discovered" for just looking gorgeous. You need to show you want to model.

2. Look for Opportunities

Opportunities don't just fall into your lap. You have to be actively seeking them. Facebook is a great place to find TFP (trade for print) opportunities and paid gigs. If you want to make modeling a career you will likely want to apply to modeling agencies to help you find paid work. There are also promotional modeling agencies if you want to be involved in promo event opportunities. Check out Girls of Glam in Canada > http://gofginc.com/

3. Brand Ambassadors

Brands choose brand ambassadors and models based on MANY factors. What stands out to me is your genuine interest in my brand. If you love it, you will continue to support and promote the products. Loyalty goes a long a way. I could go on and on about this topic, but I will leave it this: If you want to be a brand ambassador, don't expect FREE product without doing anything.

4. Photo Shoots

If you are invited or accepted for photo shoots, there are a few things to consider:

-BE ON TIME, No one has time to wait for you

-Plan for Make Up and Hair (MUAH). Is someone doing your makeup on location?
Do you need to show up ready?

-If there is a Make Up Artist, you should show up with a clean face so they have a blank canvas to work with. Again, save them time!

-Modeling is a lot of waiting around, accept that now. You will have to wait for other models, lighting, photographers, MUAH, location changes, set-up etc. SO when it is your time to model, you have to turn it on and bring your best!

5. Looking Good is Half the Battle

The BEST models are the "Most Perfect" or "Beautiful". There's more to modeling than looking good!

-Good Models have confidence, they are NOT divas and know that everything is not about them

-Posing! Not every photographer will give you direction. Some will give you a lot and place you like a doll and some will go behind the camera and expect you to pose. Talk to the photographer about what "look" they are going for or if they want you to pose in a certain way. Be prepared and practice! knowing your own angles and what looks good on your body saves them a lot of work and time.

-Be Professional. Show up on time, Take Direction, Be Polite & Respectful

-Credit your photographers! If you post their photos, mention them and give credit to MUAH too. Unless you have paid for your photos for business purposes, you do not own the rights to the photos

I could probably write 10 pages about modeling, but these are the Tips that I think are really important for you to know if you want to get into modeling. Knowing your role as a model is very important. If you are there to show off a product, you job is to represent that brand. If you are collaborating with a photographer who wants you to shoot a specific concept, you have to be willing to work with them and put your own creative ideas aside. There is a difference between paying for a fitness or glamour photo shoot for yourself with photos that you want and working for or with a brand or photographer.
