Don't be a Boomerang
I am writing this because I am 100% guilty of this. Throughout many times in my life I have gone back to "what I know" or what is comfortable, instead of trying something new. I have done this jobs or career paths and before I started my own business I hopped around from one MLM business to another. Many women I know also do this with relationships. They either keep going back to the same person or type of partner, not because it is what's best for them, but because it is "comfortable".
So you're probably thinking, "I've done this before...what's the problem?" The problem is that boomerangs don't travel or move forward. They initially get thrown forward, but end up circling back to where they started. Now you might be understanding WHY you boomerang. Moving forward into the unknown is scary. You don't know the "next step" or next move because you have never gone through the motions.
When we are afraid of new experiences or the "unknown," we can backslide into old habits, patterns, jobs, relationships or experiences for safety. The tricky part about being a boomerang is that we think it is a "good thing" because we are not scared and know the outcome. So it must be a good choice, Right? Well not always. We can boomerang back into our old lives easily, but it does not mean it a positive action to take for our lives. We often end up in the same situation we had been avoiding after the first time we left that opportunity or experience. We end up re-learning old lessons and encountering the same problems. That being said, there have been times when I HAD TO BOOMERANG because I needed to relearn the same lesson with a new perspective or know "for sure" that the opportunity was not for me.
How do we avoid being a boomerang?
Past relationships or opportunities will always "show up" again and again in our lives. They will tempt us to go back because as time passes we remember the positive parts and choose to forget the negative experiences. This happens for a reason! The reason isn't a sign that you should "go back". These things show up to test our knowledge and intuition. What have we learned since that experience? Are we facing similar challenges now than when we were in that situation? What can we learn from that previous experience that can be applied to the present? What did we learn about ourselves during that time and how did it bring us to where we are now?
Think about how and WHY your life has moved forward since the past experience. Would you have met the same people or gotten the opportunities you have if you stayed in that particular situation? There's always reasons not to go backward, but sometimes the great memories or moments take over, especially if we are going through a rough time. Things weren't better "before," they were completely different and guess what? You are a different version of YOU than before. So it was great for past you, but maybe not the right decision for present or future YOU.
I hope you enjoyed today's topic. It applies to not only entrepreneurs, but anyone wanting to move onward and upward and grow into their best self!
