Let Your Introvert Flag Fly
For most of my life I identified with being an Extrovert. With the hobbies I enjoy and the type of person I saw myself as I truly thought I was an extrovert. I liked being the center of attention, performing and hosting social events. I also spent a lot of time alone. I was okay with being alone and my creative side had a chance to flourish when I had that time to look inward and dig deep into inspiration. I've always enjoy writing, dancing, choreographing, designing and painting. I saw these interests as "creative," but not related to being an introvert.
The word "introvert" used to make me think of people who read books and didn't like to get out the house. That wasn't "me," or what I wanted to be seen as so I kept thinking I was an extrovert. I took countless opportunities that screamed extrovert. Some of these experiences I enjoyed, a lot of them I didn't. I would commit to super social events or jobs and feel drained. Being around people all day everyday drained me, but being alone all day did not feel great either.
In the past few years I have finally accepted that I am both extrovert and introvert. I enjoy hanging out with friends, but I'd rather socialize in small groups. I like going to parties once in awhile, but I thrive more in situations where I can deeply connect with one or two people. I usually find one or two people at a party and really get to know them, rather than floating around with a fake smile. I also don't really enjoy the "jobs" or roles that I thought I would. I don't enjoy talking to tons of people all day. I like leading groups discussions or coaching people one on one, but chatting or connecting with more than 10 people a day (customer service based positions) is super exhausting for me.
Why did it take me so long to accept and wave my introvert flag? Honestly, I thought my traits that were introverted were undesirable. I wanted to be the life of the party! Now I see this is completely ridiculous. The things I enjoy and that bring me happiness are those introvert passions! This part of my personality needs to be celebrated because it is a huge part of who I am. Being an entrepreneur, especially for my specific online business has given me an outlet to express this part of my personality. If YOU feel you have a lot of introvert traits and you don't know how they will help you succeed, you are not alone! That is one of my favorite parts of online businesses, introverts excel at them! They give you an opportunity to create and show your true colors in a way that feels authentic. There are parts of my business when I have to get uncomfortable and use my extrovert skills, but overall I love what an online platform has done for my self esteem and how it has helped me accept myself as a creative person.
Hope you enjoyed today's topic! Don't be afraid to let your introvert flag fly!
