Your Role is "All of the Above"
If you are transitioning from a corporate job to running your own business this will be the hardest lesson that you will learn. What's your role going to be? Well... Everything. In a "normal" job, your description is usually outlined on a contract. You can step away when tasks do not fit your job description or you can go "above and beyond" and hopefully get compensated for it. Being an entrepreneur is basically always going above and beyond and praying that it works.
If you have recently launched your start-up business or are thinking about it with a small budget (and little help), this post is definitely for you! I started from nothing, by myself. I had to do everything. I even created my own website because I knew after hours of frustration I would figure it out. What most people do not understand is that if you do not have money to pay someone else to do the tasks that you don't want to do, those tasks will either not get done or YOU have to do them!
In the beginning, your role is Every Role. Some of us have business partners which can lessen the load. You can delegate roles according to each other's strengths. In the past year I have been lucky to recruit my boyfriend to help me, but that's it. I am not saying it cannot be done, because it can! You just have to have the motivation and organization to do it all. Here are some of the "roles" you should be considering that will need to be filled or passed on, I will relate it to my own business to give you an idea:
-Designer (clothing, sourcing materials)
-Packing & Shipping Orders
-Social Media (Daily Posts, Images, Photography for IG, FB & Twitter)
-Promotional Work (Emails, Sales, Event coordination)
-Customer Service
-Website (creation, design & updates)
-Accounting (expenses, profits, budget)
-Networking (collaborative opportunities, brand ambassadors, events)
There is a lot to consider and if your business is not growing at the pace you want, one of these roles may not be fulfilled. It isn't easy, I definitely understand that! I do these types of "check-ins" for my own business. I think what does a "bigger brand" have access to that I don't yet or what piece of the puzzle needs a little more attention to help me stay organized and on course to succeed.
I hope this post helps you and doesn't discourage you. When I first launched my brand, I had no idea what I was in for. I totally underestimated the amount of time and work it takes to successfully run and grow a business on my own. That is why I want to help YOU! As always, I am available if you want to connect, I love connecting with other entrepreneurs and working together to help each other grow! Have an amazing weekend!
