Stop Competing Start Creating

"No one is you and that is your power".

That was one of the best pieces of advice I've ever received. It gave me permission to believe in what I had to offer as an individual and as an entrepreneur. Before I launched my brand I did not let the noise of other people's opinions or fears get in my way. A lot of people doubted if what I was creating was "original enough" and they told me there was too much of like products on the market for me to compete.

But what they didn't understand, was I was not there to compete, I was there to create.

So how do we believe in what we have to offer without worrying about the competition and WHY does it matter?

When we Compete, we Lose Ourselves.

If we are always focused on what other people are doing, how will we get a solid grasp on what we want to create? We can't, just like it is not healthy to compare our bodies or beauty to other people, it is not healthy to compare our brands. We will have products or services like other people. That's obvious, but what makes them different are the PEOPLE. It is our beliefs, personality and experiences that make it different. If you find yourself focusing too much on the "competition," take yourself away and out of it. Stop checking out what other people or brands are doing, focus on your mission, values and mantras and create from a place of inspiration instead of competition.

Competing is False Control

At the end of the day, you can't control where people go to buy services or product. All you can control is the product, service and atmosphere you create. So when we are too focused on competing, we are stuck in the mindset of controlling outcomes. We are competing solely because we want to be "better" than our competition. When we get stuck in this type of mindset, we can block abundance and organic connection. We no longer will have something authentic to offer and we may miss those REAL connections that we would have made if we were secure in our own business and focused on what we offer versus trying to be "one up" on someone else. People will pay more for value or experience than a competitive price or a "good deal". I don't know about you but I'd rather have people rave about the quality and exceptional service they receive than a fair price.

Competing Vs. Collaborating

Let's look at some positive outcomes that can result from having a competitive mindset. If you like what another brand is doing, try a few of their strategies or learn WHY they are working for them. Don't replicate or copy everything they do, but approach it as a learning experience to see how you can better yourself or your brand. If you admire another brand for their social media or culture they have created, consider collaborating with them. Instead of competing, join forces! Organize an event with them, team up for a giveaway or meet with the creative forces that helped them. It is much more empowering to celebrate other businesses strengths than competing with them. If you can team up with those who are strong, it will make you stronger and everyone wins!

It can be difficult not to get caught up in what other people or brands are doing. We want to be the best we can be, but we cannot lose ourselves or our own vision in the process. Stay focused on what you want to create and communicate that with others. Your staff, customers, friends and followers will appreciate your authenticity more than anything!
